End of the IndependentWHO Vigil in Geneva and Paris

Because the World Health Organization (WHO) fails in its duty to protect those populations affected by radioactive contamination, a “Vigil” was held in front of WHO headquarters in Geneva from 26 April 2007 until 26 April 2017. Every working day, between 8am and 6pm, a relay of members of the “IndependentWHO – Health and Nuclear” collective demanded that WHO should assume its responsibilities, independently of the nuclear establishment.
These silent demonstrators were also demanding that the truth be told about the short-term and long-term health damage suffered by all the victims of radioactivity, including those resulting from atmospheric military nuclear tests and the civil disasters of Chernobyl and Fukushima.
At the end of 10 years of protest, with the official denial remaining unchanged in spite of all the testimonies of the victims and the independent scientific publications that prove the reality of the situation, IndependentWHO has now decided to continue its struggle in other forms: making use of what has been achieved and learned during these 10 years of struggle and passing that on to those who consider that this fight for truth and health remains essential. On the occasion of this last day, a “Mass Vigil” was organized, attended by a hundred people. A commemorative stele was unveiled and a copy of the English version of Wladimir Tchertkoff’s book “The Crime of Chernobyl – the Nuclear Gulag” was handed to the WHO for the attention of its director, Margaret Chan.

End of the Vigil in Paris

In Paris, about 20 people attended the final Vigil at the Ministry of Health on 5th May 2017. Throughout the afternoon, texts were read, including articles and testimonies of victims of radioactivity from nuclear tests, from the Chernobyl and Fukushima disasters and discharges from power stations that are still in operation, and there were many exchanges with passers-by.

The Vigil for April 2017 – Geneva and Paris

Between April 26th 2007 and April 26th 2017, the Hippocratic Vigil was held outside the WHO headquarters in Geneva, making a total of 522 weeks without interruption. The vigil consisted of a silent presence that aimed to remind the World Health Organization of its obligations as set out in its constitution. We added the name of Hippocrates to our description because of the ethical rules he instituted for health practitioners. As far as the protection of the health of people affected by the consequences of the nuclear industry is concerned, the World Health Organization ignores these rules.

We believed it was important to address ourselves to those who are partly responsible for deciding WHO policy. It is for this reason that, on 9th November 2012, we began a Vigil outside the Ministry of Health in Paris. The Ministers of Health are the representatives of the member countries of WHO, and they are involved in deciding the policies and actions that this institution pursues in the area of radioprotection. This silent and peaceful vigil, which took place every Friday from 9am to 5pm outside the Ministry of Health in Paris, came to an end on 5th May 2017.

We will maintain this silent and peaceful vigil every Friday from 9am to 5pm outside the Ministry of Health in Paris, until France takes the necessary steps to ensure that WHO fulfils its mission to protect the population from radioactive pollution, and that a programme of independent research is put in place on a national and / or European level, on the theme of “Health and nuclear power”.

Dominique Maddaléna

Dominique Maddaléna was one of the cornerstones of the Vigil in Paris, ever since it first began outside the Ministry of Health in November 2012. He had also taken his turn at the vigil in Geneva several times. He was utterly committed to the action in Paris and was to be seen there every Friday right up until last April when health problems made it impossible for him to continue. He died this October 2016 and his humanity, his presence, always warm and welcoming, will certainly be missed by all of those who had the opportunity to spend time in his company.
